Backup for Workgroups - Support - Setup Issues

The two most common items that cause setup problems are:

  • Problems with specifying the Windows account to run the Data Repository Service
  • Setup reports that it cannot write to the Installation Folder

Specifying the Windows account to run the Data Repository Service

While you are installing the Data Repository Manager, you receive an error indicating that the "Service is Unable to Install."

You can receive this error if you are logged in as a standard user at the time you run the Setup Program OR if the Windows Account that you choose to run the Data Repository Manager under does not have the proper Rights OR you do not have the correct Username and Password for that Account.

Why did this problem occur?

Three different situations can prompt this error situation:

  1. The Account login username, password or domain name is incorrect.
  2. You are logged in under an Account that does not have the Rights to install Services.
  3. The Windows Account specified does not have the right to run as a Service.

How can I fix this problem?

The most common error occurs when the login credentials specified for running the Data Repository Manager Service are incorrect.  For example, typing the wrong password for the Windows Account.  Another common mistake occurs when using the local Administrator password in a domain environment that has a different Domain Administrator password.

So, when the Setup Program encounters an error installing the Data Repository Service, the first place to start troubleshooting is to double-check or re-type the Windows Account name and it's associated password that you want to use to RUN the Data Repository Manager Service.  This account should have the Rights to run services.

If you have double-checked this and the Data Repository Service still does not run, then you need to make sure that you are logged in under a Windows Account that has the Right to install Services.  Standard Users DO NOT HAVE the Right to install Services.  So, if you are logged in under a Standard User Accounts, you need to logout and login under an Administrator Account.  Administrator Accounts typically have the rights to install and run Services.

Setup reports that it cannot write to the Installation Folder

This problem occurs typically when a portion of Backup for Workgroups is running and it needs to be shut down.  Windows Security measures are keeping Backup for Workgroups from shutting itself down properly.  This is very common when you use Remote Desktop because Windows Security prevents standard applications running on one desktop from interacting with and/or closing other applications running on other desktops.  In other words, Backup for Workgroups is running on one desktop and the Setup Program is running on another and Windows is preventing the communication between the two.

How can I fix this problem?

The way you go about fixing this problem depends on where the error occurred - whether you were installing or updating the Backup Client or the Data Repository Manager.  Refer to the appropriate section below for steps on correcting this situation.
