System Requirements
Backup for Workgroups consists of two software components: the Backup
Server software that receives the backup
data and stores it to your Primary Storage location, and a Backup Client component that is installed on every Windows computer you want to
backup. The Backup Clients communicate with the Backup Server via TCP/IP over Port 2125.
Supported Operating Systems:
- Windows Server 2008 (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows Server 2003 (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows 7
- Windows Vista
- Windows XP
- Windows 2000
This list also includes the Small Business Server (SBS), Enterprise,
Standard , and Data Center versions of Windows 2003 and Windows 2008 and the
Pro, Home and Media Center versions of Windows XP, Vista and 7.
Supported Versions of Exchange Server:
- Exchange Server 2010
- Exchange Server 2007
- Exchange Server 2003
- Exchange Server 2000
Backup Server:
The Backup Server software can be installed on any Windows computer on your network with access to enough disk-based
storage to hold all of your Clients' backup data. You must setup your
Backup Server computer first, so it is ready to
receive and store the backup data received from your Clients.
- Operating System: (see list above)
- Memory: Approximately 15 MB RAM required.
- Program Disk Space: approx. 10 MB of disk space at installation.
- TCP/IP: The Backup Server uses TCP/IP to communicate with the Clients.
If you can access the Internet, you have TCP/IP support.
- Firewalls: Open Port 2125 to receive inbound Client connections.
- Runs as a Service: Install as a service to provide uninterrupted 24/7 scheduled backups. Must be installed
under a Windows user account with a password and administrative privileges.
- Runs as an Application: Install as an Application to run from the "Start Up" group.
- Primary Storage Device(s): Store backup data on any local internal, external or network attached hard drive
device including: IDE, SCSI, SATA, NAS, USB, Firewire, etc. With Backup for Workgroups, you can add
additional storage devices to increase your storage capacity.
- Storage Space: Adequate disk space must be available to hold the backup data from all Clients. Backup for
Workgroups uses compression, revision limits and non-redundant techniques to minimize storage space. A typical rule-of-thumb is
to have equal or greater than the sum of the disk space used by all the Clients.
Client Software
The Client software can be installed on any Windows server, desktop or laptop computer that you would like to backup.
- Operating System: (see list above)
- Memory: Approximately 5 MB RAM required.
- Program Disk Space: approx. 8 MB of disk space at installation.
- TCP/IP: Clients use TCP/IP to communicate with and send data to the
Backup Server computer.
- Firewalls: Clients do not open any ports nor accept any inbound connections.
- Runs as a Service: Install as a service to provide uninterrupted 24/7 scheduled backups. Must be installed
under a Windows user account with administrative privileges. (Password required for Windows
2008, Windows 2003 or Windows 7, Windows Vista Clients.)
- Runs as an Application: Install as an Application to run from the "Start Up" group.
- Storage Space: Every Client builds a database that is stored locally. This database keeps track of
the files that have been backed up. For a typical Client computer that has an average of 15,000 files included in the
backup process, this database will consume approximately 10 MB.
