Sample Installations

Backup for Workgroups consists of two components:  a Client component that is installed on the computer you wish to backup, and a Data Repository Manager component that collects and stores all of the Client backup data.

Depending upon your environment, you can run both components on the same computer, or separate them on to (2) different computers on the same network.  The backup process is the same either way:

The Backup Process

  1. The Client performs the backup of the computer
  2. Data is sent to the Data Repository Manager
  3. The Data Repository Manager stores the data on the hard drive storage device

Some people may want to install the Data Repository on an existing computer in their office, such as a File Server, a Print Server, or even a Windows workstation.  Others may choose to use a dedicated computer as the Data Repository computer - meaning all that computer does is run Backup for Workgroups and hold the Data Repository.  You can also plug in an external hard drive and make the Data Repository the same computer you are backing up - the choice is yours.

Keep in mind that any Data Repository computer will need to have access to enough free hard disk space to hold the Clients' backup data.  If you don't have the open IDE slot to add a new hard drive, simply buy an external USB or Firewire storage device and connect it to the Data Repository Computer.

Below are several sample installations and what Backup for Workgroups software you would need to use for each:

Installing Backup for Workgroups on just ONE computer.

Backup for Workgroups is a great solution for backing up a single computer, such as a Windows 2008 or Windows 2003 Server.  When you have just one computer to backup, this computer is a Backup Client and serves as the Data Repository Manager.

  1. Run the Backup for Workgroups setup program on the computer that you want to backup.  Now the setup program will ask you a few questions.
  2. When asked if this is the first time you are installing BFW.  Choose YES.
  3. Do you want to include this computer in the backup process.  Choose YES.
  4. Specify where you want your the BFW software installed.
  5. Now, tell BFW where you want to store your backup data. In this case, you need to provide the path to the external USB hard drive.
  6. The Setup program will ask you if you want to use the Open File Add-On.  Choose YES.  This will include the Exchange & SQL databases in every backup.
  7. Now the Setup program will finish the installation process and you can begin backing up your computer.

Using a Multi-Purpose or Dedicated Computer as the Data Repository

If your office has a multi-purpose server, such as a print server, a file server, or even an e-mail server, you can make this your Data Repository computer.  If your office has a computer that is not being used, you can make this computer your Data Repository computer.  Or if your budget permits, you can also use a brand-new computer or server as the Data Repository computer.

  1. Install the Data Repository Manager software on the Server C: drive, and tell it to store the backup data on your hard drive storage device.
  2. Setup the Client computers with individual Client names and passwords.  If a Client is a server, make sure to activate the Open File Add-On to cover SQL, Exchange and Active Directory.
  3. Install the Client software on each of the Client computers.  Make sure to use the same Client name and password that was established in the Data Repository Manager.
  4. When the Clients perform a backup, the data will be sent to Data Repository Manager.
  5. The Data Repository Manager sends the data to the hard drive storage device.
  6. Mirror the Data Repository to a second hard drive storage device, which can be rotated or taken off-site (optional)

Purchase:
(3) Client Licenses
(2) Open File Add-Ons

Using a Workstation as the Data Repository Computer

If you don't have a server and your Windows computers are networked together, you can choose one computer to act as the Data Repository computer.  Keep in mind that no matter where you install the Data Repository Manager, this computer needs access to enough disk-based storage to hold your Clients' backups.

  1. Install the Data Repository Manager software on the Workstation C: drive, and tell it to store the backup data on your hard drive storage device.
  2. Setup the Client computers with individual Client names and passwords.
