Quick Start Guide
Windows Server Backup in 3 Easy Steps

When you download the 30-day trial version of Backup for Workgroups, a copy of the executable program BFWSETUP.EXE is saved
on your computer. This program includes both the Backup Client software as well as the Backup Server software.
To get Backup for Workgroups up and running, you need to complete the following tasks in the order presented below:
- Determine which computer(s) you want to backup.
- Purchase or select the storage device you plan to use to hold your backup data. Install and configure this backup storage device and make it
accessible to the first computer that you want to backup.
We recommend: when possible, use internal hard drives or locally attached
storage such as a USB drive as your primary storage. Although you can use
network attached storage (NAS) or network shares to hold your backup data,
these devices will SLOW down the backup process and they introduce
additional points of failure that you avoid when you use local hard drives.
If you are interested in using inexpensive NAS and network share storage,
consider using it as your Backup for Workgroups Mirror.
- Download and install Backup for Workgroups on the first computer that you
want to backup. This is the computer that has access to the storage device
that will hold your backup data. This computer will act as the Backup Server
in a multi-computer backup environment.
- Install Backup for Workgroups on each additional computer that you want to
backup. We refer to these computers as Backup Clients. The Backup Client
software backs up the computer and sends the backup data to the computer
running the Backup Server so the Backup Server can store the backup data
into the appropriate Backup Client account on the storage drive.
-
Review and configure options within Backup for Workgroups that allow you to:
- Create custom backup sets.
- Stay informed of backup activities with email summary reports.
- Mirror your backup data with the built-in mirror feature, allowing you to make a second copy of your backup data.
- Before the end of your 30-day trial period, purchase the Backup for Workgroups
Client Licenses you need so you can continue backing up your computers after the trial period ends.
After you purchase the Backup for Workgroups Licenses, you will receive an email with instructions letting you know how to enter the
License Numbers into Backup for Workgroups.

HELPFUL TOPICS....
- Backup for Workgroups comes with a default backup set called "All Local Drives", which covers every file and folder
found on hard drives local to that computer. We recommend leaving this backup set intact for the most comprehensive
backup coverage.
However, after installation you can customize Backup for Workgroups to better fit your individual needs and schedule.
Create additional backup sets to schedule more frequent backups for critical data. To create or modify a backup set run the Backup Client and
go to Tools > Manage Backup Sets and proceed through the wizard.
- Keep in mind that the first backup takes the most time, because it is the first, or "baseline" backup.
Subsequent backups are sometimes called "incremental backups," because only the changes are captured. Incremental
backups keep your backup window, or time to backup, to a minimum.
- While you are installing the Backup Client software on your computers, it might be a good time to make a Disaster Recovery
Kit for each one. There are several important items that need to be included in a computer's Disaster Recovery Kit.
We can walk you through how to do it now, so you are not left high and dry later.
