256-bit AES Encryption

Backup for Workgroups protects your data by encrypting your backup files.  Three different levels of encryption support are available.  To select the level of encryption that you want to use, go to the Data Repository Manager, select Tools > Preferences > Encryption.

256 bit / AES

Now you can take advantage of Backup for Workgroups' built-in support for 256 bit AES encryption.  If you are a Backup for Workgroups user with version 1.x or 2.x running at your location and you would like to start using 256 bit AES encryption, this is a premium feature and you will need to purchase an upgrade to Version 4.x.

If you are running Backup for Workgroups in evaluation mode, note that the 256 bit encryption feature is disabled to comply with US export regulations.

When you purchase a license for Backup for Workgroups, the 256-bit and 56-bit encryption methods become available.  Please note encryption features are only available to customers who reside in the US or in US export-friendly countries.

56 bit / Blowfish

56 bit encryption provides a high level of security to protect your sensitive data.

If you have been using the 56 bit level encryption supported in Backup for Workgroups 1.x and 2.x versions and you would like to start using the 256 bit level encryption, you will need to purchase the premium upgrade to Backup for Workgroups version 4.x.  Please note that if you choose to do this, Backup for Workgroups will use whatever encryption method you select to backup new data from that point forward.  Old backup data will remain encoded using the encryption method that was available at that time.

If you are running Backup for Workgroups in evaluation mode, note that the 56 bit encryption feature is disabled to comply with US export regulations.

Scrambling

The scrambling form of encryption is designed to store your data in a form that is not readable, to provide you with a certain amount of security while minimizing computation time.

Encryption Occurs as part of the Backup Process

Backup for Workgroups performs the encryption process as the files are backed up at the Client side.  The Backup Client software encrypts the backup data prior to sending this information to the Data Repository for storage.  As a result, the data transmitted from the Client computer to the Repository is encrypted and protected.  This prevents line sniffers from seeing the original backup content - protecting both you, your organization and your data.  The Data Repository then stores the encrypted backup data on the hard drive storage device of your choosing.

Note for Backup for Workgroups users with version 1.x - 2.x

Support for 256-bit encryption was not available in Backup for Workgroups 1.x and 2.x. versions.  If you are currently a Backup for Workgroups 1.x-2.x user, you must purchase the Premium upgrade to use the 256-bit encryption feature. For more information about the Premium upgrade, click here.
